The replica of The Yugoslavian Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara adorns 7 emerald cabochons, carefully handpicked from Jaipur, India. Crafted by our Indian artisans each stone is set in a geometric pattern giving it a fascinating finish. From replicating the structure of the Tiara to carefully setting the stones, each and every process of bringing this tiara to life had its own set of challenges. Our artisans spent around 240 man-hours handcrafting this magnificent jewel, incorporating its history into its creation.
Elizabeth was given an important gift by her husband, Grand Duke Sergei, after their marriage in 1884: the magnificent emeralds that had once belonged to his mother. Emeralds were used by her as jewelry on a number of items, such as a stomacher, necklace, and a Kokoshnik made of cloth embellished with a few emerald pieces. She later hired royal jeweler Bolin to craft an exquisite tiara out of these jewels.
Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna adopted Grand Duke Dmitry Pavlovich and Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna as foster children despite not having biological children of their own.
Elizabeth gave Duchess Maria's Kokoshnik tiara and necklace to Prince Wilhelm of Sweden after their marriage. But Maria was forced to sell the jewelry to King Alexander of Yugoslavia as a result of the Russian Revolution. On their wedding day in 1922, he gave Princess Marie of Romania the exquisite necklace and tiara. Seven emerald cabochons, many smaller diamonds set in a geometric pattern, and tiny lilies of the valley were all featured in the amazing Kokoshnik tiara.
In 1953, the tiara changed ownership as it was sold to Van Cleef & Arpels. Unfortunately, they removed the precious Romanov emeralds, selling the tiara to an undisclosed buyer and substituting the original gemstones with paste.
